Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died after being shot by a man during a speech in western Japan on Friday.
Abe served as the prime minister from 2006 to 2007 and from 2012 to 2022, the longest tenure in Japan’s history.
The 67-year-old was shot while giving a speech on the campaign trail ahead of the local House of Councillors elections scheduled for this weekend
He was transported to Nara Medical University Hospital but was in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest.
Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old, was immediately detained by police. He was in possession of an object appearing to be a gun near the scene of the attack.
