easyJet (LSE: EZJ) has announced its first new UK base in over a decade, bringing more competition and potentially lower fares to Birmingham Airport passengers, reports Sky News.
The budget airline will station three aircraft at Birmingham, enabling 16 new routes to popular destinations like Antalya, Kos, and Sharm el Sheikh. This marks a significant expansion, with easyJet also increasing existing flight frequencies by over 50%.
EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren sees the base as a boon for both leisure and business travellers, highlighting its potential for future growth.
This investment aligns with easyJet’s wider growth plans, capitalising on new Airbus deliveries for an anticipated 8% capacity increase this summer. West Midlands Mayor Andy Street echoed the positive sentiment, welcoming the new base as a benefit for both holidaymakers and business opportunities in the region.
easyJet shares were up 1.4% on Monday afternoon.
